Galerie is an avant garde streaming destination for film lovers. This bespoke platform endeavors to meld editorial articles, curated lists, live chats and movie watch parties with a video streaming platform delivering one of the most incredible and adventurous projects we've had the opportunity to collaborate on.
Unique streamer blending video, editorial and community features for film lovers.
From the first day we met the wonderful people at Galerie, the brief was clear: create a unique streamer, focused on film, that is more immersive and community focused than a video-only streaming platform.
We were immediately excited at the opportunity to collaborate with a team that was looking to break the mold of what a streamer "should" be and quickly drafted a set of wireframes so everyone involved could be on the same page as we ideated together.
Going beyond the basics
Galerie challenged us to craft a streamer that defied convention and went beyond the basics of other traditional streamers. This meant taking a curated approach to their product while providing film lovers content that stretched further than shows and movies. The result was a film-centric, user-focused community with articles, discussions, watch parties and of course some great films and shows.
Galerie's groundbreaking idea of integrating articles into their streaming platform posed a challenge for conventional video CMS. Undeterred, we seamlessly integrated our Brix CMS (via API) with their video CMS, resulting in a unique, context-rich experience. Articles offer exclusive insights, behind-the-scenes content, and deep explorations into filmmaking intricacies while connecting subscribers with the film industry's brightest and best.
Galerie prioritized community engagement as a key differentiator, drawing inspiration from The Athletic's dynamic discussions. To fulfill Galerie's vision for discussion-style forums and chat-style watch parties, we integrated Stream. This ensures a captivating, timed event experience for subscribers to engage with peers and industry leaders, fostering genuine connections and enriching interactions.
Galerie is a product focused on film, filmmakers, and film lovers... so they had to have Watch Parties. So, we integrated Stream's chat messaging system right into the app interface, creating a seamless and engaging experience subscribers can enjoy while messaging other viewers in real-time. This user-focused, super-rich experience has been pivotal in increasing subscriber sign-up, engagement and retention.
Galerie is built on an SVOD backbone, powered by an Auth0 user model integration. Due to the premium nature of their content and this product, Galerie knew that a robust subscriber base would be the best and most user-centric way to grow their bespoke streamer. Subscribers are able to manage their profile and subscription from within the app, reducing any and all friction for an incredible overall user experience.
The integrated user model enabled us to activate a user-specific Watchlist and Continue Watching list, providing the ability to resume watching any previously started asset. In addition, user accounts were seamlessly integrated into Stream for chats and discussions. Altogether, these subscriber focused features increase affinity, engagement and time spent with Galerie's apps.
Web as a Sandbox
Web technology is extremely agile, it is where all new features begin. Galerie is able to test new ideas, features and content swiftly without app store approval. This provides a sandbox for crafting road-tested, user-approved features before integrating into native and 10-foot apps.
Galerie launched their first app on the web with an incredible bespoke product we designed and developed from the ground up specifically for them. This provided the North Star for the native and 10-foot apps we designed, for a partner to develop. Having a finished, approved and universally loved web-app made the implementation of the designs we crafted for the native and 10-foot simple, with expectations clearly defined by an already successful product.
The goal from the start was to create a holistic design system applicable across all platforms and apps beginning with web desktop and mobile and extended for native mobile and tablets, as well as 10 ft experiences for AppleTV, Amazon Fire and Roku. We worked in lock step with the stakeholders from Galerie to adapt a vision from their brand team into a fully working, incredible product.
Brix CMS + Galerie
Galerie was looking for an efficient solution for crafting an editorial content library, and we immediately knew Brix CMS was a perfect fit. While typically used for web-apps, Galerie utilizes our Brix APIs to syndicate content across native and 10-foot apps. The pre-launch microsite, entirely powered by Brix, showcased original content, convincing Galerie of its user-friendly and powerful features. This led to seamlessly extending its use to the entire app ecosystem.
Our relationship with Galerie started back in December of 2019 with a 2 hour meeting in Santa Monica, California set up by our dear friends at DotStudioPro. Since then, we have worked in tandem constantly looking for new ways to make their apps better, faster and more performant while at the same time helping them make sure their operations remain as efficient as possible.
